Many of our clients are asking will VOIP help my business. My question is, what do you think VOIP is and how do you feel it could help your business?

It seems that people associate VOIP with "Free" phone calls. I think the public needs to be better educated.

VoIP to me is a great way to take your landline and make it very portable through the Internet. It is a definite way to save on long distance calls (e.g., eliminate it all together).

For office to office communications, or having a VoIP phone at home off of your business phone system are great tools that can increase your productivity, and decrease costs. But, many people hear VoIP and think free phone calls to anywhere. There needs to be a more concerted effort to explain the uses and drawbacks of VoIP technology to the public.

As a telecommuter, I think VoIP is terrific. This technology allows me to work from my home office, and only drive into the main office twice a week. With the price of gasoline, this is a very smart way to do business!

The smart telcos are getting into VoIP. Some, like Qwest, are late to the party, but finally "getting it". That should say it all. The best deals for SMB's is with on of the independent hosted companies, such as Pan Terra's "Worksmart" (although there are others). As long as the hosting company is large enough to offer reliable service customers should be very happy (and financially better off) with VoIP service. The weak spots in VoIP is in the reliability of your local Internet provider and your power company. Fortunately, the good companies offer "emergency routing" to cover their clients when the power or their Internet fails. The easiest way to handle it, is to route your emergency service to a cellular phone. The feature I like best about VoIP (besides the huge cost savings) is the "find me, follow me" service that makes sure I never miss a call.
