Internet Security, Is It Really Needed ???

Posted on 2/5/2008 9:46 PM

In talking to many business owners it seems that most of them want to enforce some sort of IT / Internet security policies but don't have the time or the knowledge to deploy or monitor this type of technology.

Is this a waste of time or it is really needed to protect your company and staff  ????

Absolutely, IT security is essential for any business. With the amount of sensitive information on employee's computers these days any breech can be devastating to your business. Just look at what happened to the Dept. of Veterans Affairs when an employee lost an external hard drive containing the Social Security Numbers and private medical information on millions of veterans.

To not use Internet Security is akin to driving without a seatbealt in my opinion. You are fine untill that dreaded day hits, and it will. The cost and time to implement the technology is at a point where with minimal guidance and the proper software, you can protect your assets and private info like the pro's. Why chance it?

"Red Flag Guidelines" go into effect this year requiring all Financial institutions to establish a written, risk based identity theft program. The guidelines will address reconciliation procedures required by sections 114 and 315 of the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (FACTA). Some reports say 8.4 million Americans were victims in 2006. The government is getting serious and looks like businesses will carry the load to help clean it up.

And don't forget internal security. Just because you have a good firewall between your network and the Internet, doesn't mean that some disgruntled employee won't crack you from inside. And there's always the danger of some well-meaning employee bringing in something from home that is infected with a virus or key logger.
